Description:
Abstract:
This shapefile is intended to show both the shallowest pricipal aquifer and possible basement aquifers within the Great Basin, generalized from the U.S.G.S. shapefile "Principal Aquifers of the 48 Conterminous United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands". Attributes include (1) the original USGS aquifer name, (2) inferred basement aquifer rocks that might be expected at the several kilometers depth of geothermal resource drilling, and (3) generalized shallow aquifer name. The abstract of the original U.S.G.S. shapefile gives a good explanation of the base data: This data set contains the shallowest principal aquifers of the conterminous United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, portrayed as polygons. The data set was developed as part of the effort to produce the maps published at 1:2,500,000 in the printed series "Ground Water Atlas of the United States". The published maps contain base and cultural features not included in these data. This is a replacement for the July 1998 data set called Principal Aquifers of the 48 Conterminous United States.
Purpose:
For geothermal exploration, at scales of 1:2,500,000 or smaller.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
1. U.S.G.S. builds shapefile 2. Shapefile retrieved from http: HTTP://www.nationalatlas.gov/index.html Shapefile is projected into Lambert Conformable Conic projection Shapefile is clipped to boundary of the Great Basin 5. Throughgoing polygons of alluvial fill are terminated at approximate contacts of deeper underlying bedrock aquifers. Thus polygons of [potential] deep bedrock aquifers and surface aquifers can be displayed. 6. Polygon attribute fields are created for [potentially] deepbedrock aquifer type. Simplified polygon attribute fields are created showing generalized surface bedrock and alluvial aquifer type.
